CLAGS was deeply saddened to learn of
the passing of Professor George F. Custen,
a longtime CLAGS supporter, and a faculty
member of both the American Studies and Film
Studies Certificate Programs here at the
Graduate Center. Custen, who was also Chair of
the Department of Media Culture at CUNY’s
College of Staten Island, his home college,
served on CLAGS’s board of directors from
1997 through 2001. Among his work, which
included the publications of Bio/Pics: How Hollywood
Constructed Public History (1992), and Twentieth Century’s Fox:
Darryl F. Zanuck and the Culture of Hollywood (1997), Custen
was instrumental in establishing the James D. Woods, III
Fellowship, which CLAGS administered during the years
1999-2002 to New York-area graduate students doing
LGTBQ research. During the past year, Custen had been on
leave to research material for an upcoming biography of
Hollywood director and producer George Stevens.
