CLAGS 25th Anniversary

Dear CLAGS family,

This semester marks a very important moment in the history of CLAGS, as we are celebrating our 25th anniversary at the CUNY Graduate Center. Since April 1991, CLAGS has been an academic home for students, faculty, and staff members at the Graduate Center, at CUNY, and all over New York City.

CLAGS has definitely come a long way. We have seen 7 executive directors, dozens of staff members, around 200 board members, thousands of conference and workshop participants, and even a few thousand followers and supporters on Facebook and Twitter. CLAGS has gone from small groups of people in small classrooms to packed auditoriums with hundreds of people and even more watching our live streams from all over the world.

For 25 years, CLAGS has been able to provide LGBTQ people and their supporters with LGBTQ affirming fellowships, scholarships, events, conferences, workshops, seminars, shows, and conversations  – while promoting, developing, and learning about Queer Theory, Gender Studies, and Trans Studies from some of the most renowned professors, educators, artists, and activists in the world. Over time, the focus of CLAGS would also include concepts like Intersectionalities, Critical Race Theory, and Genderqueerness- demonstrating the multiple dimensions and complexities of our communities, as well as the various ways that our multiple identities impact our lives.

To celebrate our 25th anniversary, CLAGS is hosting a number of wonderful events. First, on Friday, March 4, 2016, CLAGS invites you to our 25th Anniversary Conference, at the CUNY Graduate Center, Elebash Hall, from 9am- 5pm. Our CLAGS founder and first Executive Director, Martin Duberman, will serve as our keynote speaker, and we will be joined by almost all of our former Executive Directors (including Jill Dolan, Alisa Solomon, Paisley Currah, and Sarah Chinn). We will also hear from a multitude of speakers, including Jonathan Ned Katz, Darnell Moore, Yoruba Richen, Tucker Pamella Farley, Jose Quiroga, Carmen Vasquez, Jessie Daniels, Matt Brim, and more! Lunch will be served and a wine & cheese reception will take place at 4pm. Please RSVP here.

Second, on May 6, 2016, CLAGS will be hosting our 25th Anniversary Celebration at the LGBT Center (208 W. 13th Street, Room 301) from 7-9pm. Immediately following the Gay American History Conference taking place at the New School, we invite everyone to celebrate with us with food, drinks, reflections, and more! More information to come.

Please check in the next few weeks.

Finally, we are excited that CLAGS will be featured in the forthcoming “Queer Methods” issue of WSQ: Women’s Studies Quarterly (Fall/Winter 2016). The special issue, entitled “CLAGS at 25: Classic and Contemporary” is edited by Matt Brim and Amin Ghaziani, and will include reflections by CLAGS visionaries Jill Dolan, Rosamond King, Kevin Nadal, and Martin Duberman. WSQ invites you to follow the conversation with us as we celebrate the ongoing work of CLAGS. For information about WSQ and our publisher, the Feminist Press, visit or see the attached flyer!

I am looking forward to celebrating with you all,

Kevin L. Nadal, Ph.D.
