CLAGS is pleased to announce the Joan
Heller-Diane Bernard Fellowship in Lesbian
and Gay Studies, which supports research on the
impact of lesbians and/or gay men on U.S. society
and culture. It is generously supported by Joan
Heller and Diane Bernard. After meeting over 60
years ago as teenagers at summer camp, Diane
and Joan have been life partners for more than
ten years. Joan Heller was an advertising executive
specializing in women’s cosmetics in New York
City, and Diane pioneered feminist social work
education in positions at the Women’s Studies
Program at Florida State and at the University of
Utah. The two women, committed to advancing
equality and social justice, have been generous
donors to CLAGS for a number of years now, and
we are proud to host this new fellowship in their
